Which South Africa visa do you need?

By The Expat Club · Updated September 2026

There are eight main routes into South Africa and picking the wrong one wastes months. Answer a couple of quick questions and we'll point you to your best-fit visa, with the document checklist to match.

Which South Africa visa you need depends on why you're moving: sponsored professionals typically use the Critical Skills or General Work visa, partners of South Africans use the Spousal or Life Partner visa, retirees use the Retired Person's visa, remote workers use the Remote Work visa, and entrepreneurs use the Business visa. The checker below matches your situation to the right route in about a minute.

Common questions

Which visa do I need to move to South Africa?

It depends on your reason for moving: a job (Critical Skills or General Work), a South African partner (Spousal / Life Partner), retirement (Retired Person's), remote work (Remote Work / digital nomad), or business (Business Visa). The checker above maps your situation to the right one.

Do I qualify for the critical skills visa?

You qualify if your occupation is on South Africa's Critical Skills List (many IT, engineering, healthcare, science, finance and skilled-trade roles), you can prove your qualifications via a SAQA evaluation, and you register with the relevant professional body where required. No job offer is needed to apply, but you'll need one within 12 months of arriving.

What's the income requirement for the remote work visa?

Roughly R650,976 per year (about R54,000/month) from an employer or clients outside South Africa. Spend under six months in any 36-month window and you're exempt from South African tax registration.

How long does a South African visa take?

Temporary residence visas usually take around 8–12 weeks once submitted, but SAQA evaluations and police clearances can add weeks: start those early.
