Moving to South Africa from Dubai and the UAE: The 2026 Guide

There is no special visa for people leaving the UAE: you apply under the same routes as anyone else, such as remote work, critical skills, general work, retired person's or spousal, and South African citizens need no visa at all. On tax, the UAE side is simple because it does not tax individuals' income, but South African tax residency needs checking, especially if you are a South African who never formally ceased to be tax resident.

Moving to South Africa from the UAE is a different kind of move to most: many of the people making it are South Africans who went to Dubai for the tax-free salary and are now weighing a return, alongside British, Indian and other nationalities who did a Gulf posting and are choosing South Africa for what comes next. Here is what that move involves in 2026: visas, tax, shipping out of Jebel Ali, and the trade-offs.

Who's making this move

Two groups tend to make this move. South Africans have worked in the UAE in large numbers for years: a 2014 estimate put the community at around 100,000 people, many of them in Dubai, drawn by tax-free pay in sectors such as finance, aviation, hospitality and construction, and some eventually look homeward.

The second group is British, Indian and other expats who did a Gulf posting, often with children in a British or IB-curriculum school, and who sometimes choose South Africa next rather than heading straight back to a home country. Both groups run into the same four questions: which visa, what happens to tax residency, how the belongings get to South Africa, and whether the schools transfer. This guide covers all four.

Visa routes from the UAE

There is no dedicated "coming from Dubai" visa category. Applications go through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or the South African Embassy, under the same routes open to any nationality. These are the ones people moving from the UAE use most:

• Remote Work Visa (Digital Nomad): for people paid by a foreign employer under a contract of employment, with a gross salary of at least 650,976 rand a year (about AED 143,000 to 149,000 at 2026 exchange rates so far). It is issued as a visitor's visa for up to three years, so it does not let you work for a South African employer, and switching to another visa generally means applying from outside South Africa.
• Critical Skills Visa: for occupations on South Africa's critical skills list, last revised in 2023, which covers fields such as ICT, engineering, finance and healthcare. Home Affairs' checklist, effective 9 October 2024, asks for a job offer or employment contract signed by you and the employer, a SAQA evaluation of your foreign qualifications, and written confirmation of your skills from a professional body, council or board recognised by SAQA (or a relevant government department). It can be issued for up to five years.
• General Work Visa: tied to a confirmed offer from a South African employer.
• Retired Person's Visa: for foreign nationals who can show a guaranteed income of at least 37,000 rand a month.
• Spousal or Life Partner Visa: for those with a South African citizen or permanent-resident partner.

Home Affairs publishes turnaround times of four weeks for critical skills and general work visas, 60 working days for visitor's visas (the category the remote work visa falls under) and 120 working days for retired person's and relative's visas. Those figures apply only to applications lodged inside South Africa, so for an application made from the UAE they are a rough guide at best. Treat the visa as the pacing item for your move date, not an afterthought once flights and shipping are booked.

South African citizens are the exception to all of this. Citizens have a constitutional right to enter, remain in and live in South Africa, so a returning citizen does not apply for a visa. Foreign-national family members still need a route of their own, most often the spousal or life partner visa above, and your tax residency still needs sorting out (see below).

Tax: no UAE exit tax, but SARS residency still applies

The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, so there is nothing like the exit taxes some European countries apply when residents leave. That part is simpler than it is for most of the origin countries in this series.

The catch is on the South African side, and it catches South Africans specifically. SARS applies its own residency tests regardless of where you have been living. The ordinarily-resident test asks whether your permanent home, the place you will normally return to, is in South Africa.

The physical-presence test applies to people who are not ordinarily resident: you count as resident once you have been in South Africa for more than 91 days in the current tax year, more than 91 days in each of the five tax years before it, and more than 915 days across those five years.

If you are South African and moved to Dubai without formally ceasing your South African tax residency, SARS may still treat you as resident throughout, which would bring your Dubai pay into South African tax, subject to the exemption below.

Employees who spend more than 183 full days outside South Africa in any 12-month period, including a continuous stretch of more than 60 full days, can exempt the first R1.25 million of foreign employment income; anything above that is taxed at normal rates, and income earned as an independent contractor does not qualify. South Africa and the UAE have had a double taxation agreement in force since November 2016. If you count as resident in both countries, its tie-breaker rules decide which one you are treated as resident in, starting with where you have a permanent home and then where your personal and economic ties are closer. SARS does not treat someone the agreement makes resident only in the other country as a South African resident, but whether that helps depends on your facts. Get a cross-border tax adviser to look at your specific history before you file anything.

Home Affairs' checklist also tells Remote Work Visa holders to register with SARS: after more than 183 days in South Africa in any 12-month period if you are tax resident in a treaty country such as the UAE, and regardless of how long you stay if you are not.

Cost of living: AED buys more in South Africa

Monthly average rates in 2026 so far have put one dirham at between about R4.36 and R4.56, which is the number to work from if you are holding AED savings or a UAE severance payout. Rent, restaurants, domestic help and personal services generally cost less in South Africa than in Dubai, housing especially, though the gap varies a lot between cities and suburbs. The exceptions are the usual ones. Imported goods, new cars and electronics often cost more in South Africa than the exchange rate suggests, and private healthcare and schooling are real line items rather than the largely employer-covered packages many UAE contracts include. Shipping, flights and the practical move

A container shipped from Jebel Ali port to Durban commonly takes around three weeks at sea, plus another one to two weeks for South African customs clearance and delivery, so four to five weeks door to door is a rough planning figure. Ask each mover for a written timeline, because sailing schedules and customs clearance both move it.

Smaller moves usually go as a shared (groupage) container, which costs less but takes longer to consolidate. Getting between the two countries once you have moved is straightforward: Emirates serves Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban from Dubai, and the flights take roughly eight to nine and a half hours depending on the city. Check the airline's current timetable for frequencies, which change by season. That makes visiting, or a slower staged move, practical.

Bringing a pet needs a long lead time whichever country you leave from. You will need a South African veterinary import permit and a microchip and, depending on where you are travelling from, a rabies vaccination and a rabies antibody titre test with a waiting period, so start several months before travel, not weeks; our pets guide suggests three to six. Schooling: British and IB curricula transfer well

Families moving from GEMS, British or IB-curriculum schools in the UAE generally find a comparable option in South Africa. Cape Town and Johannesburg both have well-established private and international schools offering the Cambridge International (British) curriculum through IGCSE and A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate, or South Africa's own CAPS curriculum, which the Department of Basic Education sets and which is examined at the end of Grade 12 either by the state or by an independent body such as the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

Fees and waiting lists vary considerably by school, so start applications several months ahead and confirm accreditation and subject overlap with your children's current school directly rather than assuming a like-for-like transfer. Climate, driving and settling in

The lifestyle shift is real, and for most people making this move, it's the actual point: more outdoor time, mountains and beaches instead of air-conditioned malls, and a slower pace than Dubai's. Cape Town's Mediterranean climate and Durban's subtropical humidity both differ meaningfully from the UAE's desert heat. Driving takes some adjusting, because the UAE drives on the right and South Africa on the left, and most arrivals need a careful week or two, particularly at junctions.

A UAE licence that is in English (or comes with a translation) and carries your photo and signature is valid in South Africa on the terms it was issued under. Once you return to live permanently or are granted permanent residence, you need to exchange it for a South African licence while it is still valid. Official sources differ on the deadline: the road traffic regulations and the Western Cape Government allow five years, while gov.za says one year, so converting within the first year is the safe course. An International Driving Permit has to come from the country that issued your licence, because South Africa's Automobile Association issues them only to holders of South African licences.

Two things UAE arrivals notice more than most: electricity supply and personal safety. As of October 2026, Eskom reports no load-shedding (scheduled national power cuts) since 16 May 2025, though targeted load reduction still affects some areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and many households keep an inverter or solar backup for local faults; our load-shedding guide has the current picture.

Is it the right move?

Moving to South Africa from the UAE suits people who want more space, a change of pace, and dirham savings or foreign income that can go further, provided they go in clear-eyed on the SARS residency question (especially if South African) and on the safety planning the country requires. Get the tax residency question checked properly before you assume a clean slate. The rest (visas, shipping and schools) mostly comes down to lead time, and the direct flight network makes it easy to go back and forth while you decide.
